Blow off from the Prez
Welcome to another edition of Blowoff from the Prez. The warm weather is here and it’s time to
cram in as much brewing as possible before it gets unbelievably hot. We have a homebrewing demo
coming up at the Broken Barrel on Saturday April 9, at 1pm. Then Saturday May 7 is AHA Big Brew
Day at Sunseed Food Co-op in Cape Canaveral. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more regular updates.
If you want to help represent SAAZ and enter your homebrew into an upcoming competition, now is
the time to get cranking! We will be collecting entries for the Palm Beach Blowoff at our April Officers
Meeting at Meg O Malleys on Wednesday April 6 at 6:30pm.The Hogtown Brewers are gearing up
for the Hogtown Blowoff on May 13-14. Check http://www.hogtownbrewers.org/Brewoff/ for more
details. If you have never entered or attended a competition, I would encourage you to do so. They
are a great way to get objective feedback about your brews and the competitions are always a blast!
More information is available as to dates and time of all the events I talked about and more, so
continue reading for more great stuff!
Secretary’s Report
In case you missed the Spring Party, you really missed a good time (yes, I’m rubbing it in). We had Kip’s project on display: a podium that doubles as our stereo holder. We also had a HUGE raffle with some great commercial beer, an Old Milwaukee smoker grill, a corny keg, and dinner for two at Meg O Malley’s. We also had all taps flowing with homebrew. Literally, every single tap of the jockey box and the beer engine was running. The weather was absolutely beautiful, and a good time was had by all. Hope to see you at the next meeting or the Summer Party for more fun!

Meadlennium 2011
May 28-29 2011 Sanford, FL
www.CFHB.org/mead
What: We are the oldest, and one of the largest, of just a handful of Mead- Only competitions in the USA. The Alliance of Sommeliers has graciously loaned their special, lead-crystal, glasses again this year for judging. Still only $6.00 per entry. Once again, there will be a special category – WOOD-AGED MEAD.
When: May 28-29th. The deadline to get your meads to us is May 6th. Online registration and payment will open April 20th.
Where: 1700 South Magnolia Ave. Sanford Fl. 32771
SAAZ will be working with CFHB to get entries to them as part of a beer railroad. Stay tuned for more details.
We still encourage sending THREE 12-14 oz. bottles, FOUR 10 oz. or TWO 750ml bottles. But we know how precious our mead is, so, this year, we will allow TWO 12-14 oz. bottles, THREE 10 oz. or ONE 750ml bottles, WITH THE CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU MAY NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE BEST OF SHOW ROUND OF JUDGING. Our B.O.S. panel has 4-5 judges, and each requires a 2 oz. sample. We will do our best to save enough of your mead, but, if there is not enough left, you will not be included in the B.O.S round.
All the details, and the forms, will be updated very soon at the MEADLLENNIUM web page
Consider shipping your beer to other national competitions. For a list of upcoming competitions go here.

A celebration of National Homebrew Day, known as AHA Big Brew, is now in its 14th year. Sunseed Food Co-op will host a local site on May 7, 2011.
Organized by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), AHA Big Brew celebrates National Homebrew Day, honored on the first Saturday of May. AHA Big Brew brings together thousands of homebrewers from around the world, all brewing beers simultaneously. More than 5,000 homebrewers from North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and Australia are expected to participate this year.
Spacecoast Associates for the Advancement of Zymurgy (SAAZ) is happy to invite anyone interested in homebrewing to stop by the site from 10 to 2 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2011 to join the fun!

On May 7, friends and family gather to brew one or both of the two AHA Big Brew recipes. At 1 PM Eastern time, homebrewers raise their glasses of homebrewed ales and lagers for a simultaneous toast to homebrewing, a hobby that hundreds of thousands of people around the world enjoy.
“AHA Big Brew highlights what is so special about homebrewers—their friendliness, interest in sharing with others, passion for beer, and of course their affinity for having fun,” said Gary Glass, AHA Director.
World of Beer Cruise
I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea. ‘Cause I’ve got to have beer. Love to drink the beer that’s in front of me. On board, they’ll be beer, so climb aboard. We’ll search for even more on every shore. And I’ll try, oh Lord I’ll try, to drink it ALL!
World of Beer is planning a craft beer lovers cruise! Chuck and Maribeth are finalizing details this upcoming week, but I have some preliminary information. Mark your calendar for September 23-25 for a Bahamian cruise aboard the Royal Caribbean Monarch of the Seas. WOB is working with Jill at CruiseBlondie, a full service travel agency. Jill is very knowledgeable and excited about this cruise. She will be working to make sure that everyone who books with her agency will be informed and excited. Book now to get the best deal (I hear rumors of on board credits); refunds are available more than 60 days before the cruise. I also confirmed that you DO NOT need a passport if you have your official copy of your birth certificate (look for a raised seal or something similar) and your current driver’s license.

Beer Education
Are you guys aware of the Hop Union in Yakima, WA? Yakima grows something like 70% of US grown
hops.
The Hop Union has a great website with really useful links. I especially like the Hop Variety Data
Sheets linked near the bottom of the list. It is a pdf of about 54 pages that details the characteristics
of most varieties of hops. It is a bit long but I think it is worth downloading as a handy reference.
Check it out if you haven’t already.

Cooking with Beer – Beer and Molasses Barbecue Sauce
Beer and Molasses Barbecue Sauce
1 1/4 cups bottled chili sauce
3/4 cup mild-flavored (light) molasses
3/4 cup beer
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco)
1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon hickory-flavored liquid smoke*
* A smoke-flavored liquid seasoning that is available at specialty foods stores and at many supermarkets.
Mix all ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; simmer until sauce thickens and is reduced to 2 cups, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Cool completely before using. (Can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and chill.)
