President’s Blowoff
Hi Brewers!
We just had a great weekend at Craft Beers in the Park. We helped raise money for St. Baldrick’s and supported one of our best sponsors! In case you missed it, we conducted a live brewing demo on the patio thanks to Sean McCoy for blowing it out of the water and sharing his brewing knowledge with festival patrons! We made a Honey Lager recipe made by the one and only Charlie Papazian, who is celebrating his last year as a governing member of the AHA. Cheers Charlie for all you have done to further the hobby!
We also served hand crafted beers from our members to very positive feedback, while getting the chance to recruit new members and talk about the Bottoms up Beer Run coming up in June!
On another note if you love getting feedback we encourage you to enter your Homebrew beers in our circuit competitions! Hogtown Brew-off and Sunshine Challenge are imminent, while the next opportunity looking is First Coast Cup in Jacksonville. Look for further updates on the SAAZ Facebook page for details!
Look forward to seeing everyone at the May meeting at Broken Barrel Tavern in Palm Bay on the 20th!
Cheers!
Brian
Next Club Event
MAY Member Meeting
Saturday, May 20th – 2:00 to 4:00 PM (Meet & Greet at 1:30 PM)
The Broken Barrel Tavern, 4700 S Babcock St, Palm Bay, FL 32905
Well, OF COURSE, you’ll be there! Who’s going to pass up learning new brew tips and hanging out with your fellow SAAZers at a place that boasts “hundreds of bottled beers, 41 draughts, full liquor, and made-from-scratch BBQ?” Grab a beer during our half hour “Meet & Greet” starting at 1:30pm, then settle in for some great educational stuff, announcements, and updates on all things SAAZ.
Next Intra-Club Challenge
Yep, it’s time for LAWNMOWER BEER! Brew up your best light, refreshing summer beer (5% or less ABV) that you would grab on a hot day after mowing the yard to compete for a $50 Brock’s gift card. Judging (and drinking!) will take place at the Summer Party on July 16th.
Officers Meeting Highlights
- Review of April meeting at World of Beer. Well attended. Shelly Cavins to send thank you.
- Discussion of upcoming competitions: Most of the Florida Circuit competitions are capping entries at 300 to 400, which means they are filling up very quickly. Hogtown and Sunshine Challenge are now open. First Coast Cup entry window still TBD. SAAZ needs to try to support these comps as much as possible with judging and stewarding. We will look to participate in “beer trains” for entries if possible.
- Commander SAAZ: Dates set for September 14 (Commander’s Call) and 15 (Awards Dinner) at the Radisson at the Port in Cape Canaveral. The Radisson has agreed to the same terms we had arranged at the Doubletree (which is still closed for repairs). Some helpful features that the Radisson will be providing are dedicated walk-in coolers, an extra room in which to store equipment, and a segmented judging/dining hall that will allow us perform multiple functions at the same time. Competition medal designs were reviewed in preparation for a cost-effective multi-year purchase. Need to line up the rest of the sponsorships for this event. Commemorative beer has been brewed (sorry, still a secret).
- Summer party: Location (Pelican Beach Clubhouse, A1A, Melbourne) reserved and fee paid. Food decisions made (tri-tip, and attendees to bring sides). Attendees at the spring party seemed to enjoy the “food competition,” so in addition to the lawnmower beer competition, we’re going to have a side dish competition.
- SAAZtoberfest: Location (Rotary Park Suntree) reserved and fee paid.
- Bottoms Up Beer Run (BUBR): Planning going well. Medals assembled by board members. Still need help with promotion. Sponsorships need to be finalized by May 15th to make the t-shirt deadline.
SAAZ Stars
- Chris Jojola, Nathan Gray, Brian Cavins: Brewers of “Collusion” Imperial Stout, which recently took 1st Place in one of the NHC Regionals
- Sean Gregg: Winner of the April “Hopped Up” Intra-Club Competition
- “Señor Brewmeister” Sean McCoy: Did the SAAZ brewing demo at “Craft Beers in the Park”

Sign Up Now for the Annual SAAZ Bus Trip
Go to SAAZ.org now and sign up now for the Annual SAAZ Bus Trip before all the seats are gone! Cost is $30 members and $50 for non-members. The extra $20 for non-members will make them SAAZ members for the rest of the year, providing all the usual perks, so it’s a great way to finally reel in that friend who’s been wavering on joining. Lunch consisting of sub sandwich and chips will be provided at the first brewery and dinner will be “pay your own way” at Oblivion pub/taproom. Feel free to bring stuff to share for the bus ride… snacks, brews, more snacks, more brews.
If you saw an earlier schedule, you’ll note that this one has been revised just a little. Same breweries but switching out the order a bit because Ellipsis Brewing is having a can release that day. To avoid the crowds, we’ll be going there a little later after the release event, but they said there will be cans left for us to purchase. Also, their head brewer will be meeting with us!
10:30am – Meet up at World of Beer (Viera) parking lot
11:00am – Bus departs
12:00pm – Hourglass Brewing (lunch)
2:00pm – Red Cypress Brewery (tour)
4:00pm – Bowigens Beer Company
6:00pm – Ellipsis Brewing (tour and talk with head brewer)
8:00pm – Oblivion Taproom (dinner on your own)
10:30pm – Bus arrives back at World of Beer
Let’s have fun but stay safe! Please have alternate transportation options available if needed upon your return… have a friend or family member pick you up or use Lyft or Uber. If you live some distance away, remember that there are a few hotels right there at Viera (Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, La Quinta) at Viera.
BUBR is Almost Here!
We’re approaching the home stretch for the 6th Annual Bottoms Up Beer Run on June 9th, our fun run (or walk) that benefits both St. Baldrick’s Foundation for pediatric cancer research and SAAZ. Our goal is 400 running/walking participants. The beers and ciders are being brewed and fermented. The medals have arrived and are awesome! You can help us achieve our participation goal by posting event info in runner-friendly locations and by meeting up with potential participants at local running events and distributing information cards, coasters and some swag. Of course, we’re also looking for volunteers to help on the day of the event. Anne Gregg is coordinating both the pre-event promotion activities and event day activities. Please contact Anne at BottomsUp@saaz.org.
IMPORTANT BUBR SPONSOR NOTICE: May 15th is the deadline for sending our t-shirt design in for printing, so sponsorships for which names/logos will appear on the event shirts need to be finalized now. Contact Anne at BottomsUp@saaz.org. Support St. Baldrick’s and SAAZ while getting your business name on hundreds of “active human billboards” that potential customers will see around the Space Coast and beyond for years to come.
Summer Party
Early details for the Summer Party on June 16th: FREE for PAID members and family living in the same household. Other family and guests (including non-paid members) are $5 per person for anyone over 21. Main entrée will be mouthwatering tri-tip (yum!), expertly cooked by our club’s chefs. A vegetarian option will be available as well. Plan to bring your best side dishes to share and enter in the “Super Side It!” cooking competition. Bring your entries for the Lawnmower Homebrew Competition and other homebrews you’d like to have our beer enthusiasts “Ooo” and “Ahhh” over.
Commander SAAZ Sponsorships Available
Do you have friends/contacts with businesses? Our Commander SAAZ event offers sponsorship levels suitable for any budget. Each competition entrant (and we expect many hundreds since this competition does not have an entry limit) will receive a printout, similar to the sponsors page on SAAZ’s website. The listing follows the order of the sponsorship levels (Platinum sponsors listed first, then Gold, and so on). By donating to our competition, companies will be getting their product to the appropriate and appreciative beer-centric audience. Email Cmdr.SAAZ@saaz.org if you can help with sponsors, either by recruiting the sponsor yourself or by providing a lead for a potential sponsor. We have an introductory letter that provides information about SAAZ, its educational and community service work, and explains the sponsorship levels.
